Meaningful Christmas

The old year’s ending and thoughts return
to the Christmas we knew long ago
Before commercial bodies took hold
With lavish gifts and tinsel show.

Christmas held some meaning then
Singing Carols, hearts warmed by praise
Christmas greetings are no longer used
recently changed to Happy Holidays.

From late September in all the Stores
Christmas gifts glitter to catch the eye
As youngsters see the gadgets galore
that they want their kinfolk to buy.

It is like a competition for parents
All wanting the most expensive gift
Stretching and spending beyond means
Never giving a real thought to thrift
