Local Conservation Nature Site

Biodiversity site: Market of Muir

Site Description

Market of Muir is situated to the west of Westmuir and about 2km west of Kirriemuir in a predominantly agricultural area of lowland Angus. Extending to 31.6ha, the site is divided into three parts by two roads with the majority falling north of the A926 which is further divided by a minor road.

The principal habitat is semi-natural broadleaved woodland which is considered locally rare and a UK Priority Habitat. Most of the site is dominated by birch woodland, some of which has been felled and replaced by Sitka spruce. Birch scrub separates the woodland from open areas containing remnants of wet and dry heath, and acid grassland communities.

To the east of the site is an area of wet birch woodland and wet heath which is managed as Westmuir Community Woodland. This part of the site contains a formal path network.
